TRUSTED BYÂ LEADING LAW FIRMS AND GLOBAL ORGANISATIONS
If Hard Work Was Enough, You'd Already Be There.
You've delivered excellent work, built a strong reputation, and established yourself as a capable lawyer.
Yet progressing to the next level in your career still feels frustratingly hard.
Not because you're not ready.
And not because you don't understand what progression requires.
The problem is that knowing what to do and having the time, support and opportunities to do it are two very different things.
You know you should be investing in the activities that drive progression.
But when you're juggling client demands, billable targets and competing deadlines, career development becomes the thing you'll get to when things calm down.
Except things rarely calm down.Â
And every career development programme tells you the same thing.Â
Build your network. Raise your profile. Find sponsors.Â
What they don't tell you is how to do that when you're often the only Black lawyer in the room.
How to build genuine relationships with people whose backgrounds, experiences and networks look very different from your own.
How to navigate the spaces where opportunities and influence are often created.
How to earn trust, build credibility and position yourself for progression.
And so you find yourself working harder than ever while still missing out on the opportunities, relationships and support that help careers move forward.
One client joined the programme feeling excluded, unsupported and unsure how to build the relationships needed to progress.
A few months later, she shared:
"He now involves me in all his BD efforts."
"I have built so much social capital in the firm."
That's exactly why I created Be The First Group Coaching.
Imagine Looking Back Six Months From Now And Seeing Real Progress.
Imagine being trusted with the high-profile matters that showcase your expertise and strengthen your reputation across the firm.
Imagine partners actively involving you in business development opportunities and introducing you to the conversations and relationships that influence progression.
Imagine hearing your contribution recognised in front of clients in a way it wasn't before.
Being sought out for your expertise.
Being trusted to lead.
Imagine looking back six months from now and seeing tangible evidence that your career is moving forward.
You’re on track for promotion.
You're running more significant matters.
Your expertise is recognised by clients and colleagues alike.
You're being put forward for opportunities that were previously out of reach.
Your profile is growing across your firm and in the wider market.
You know how to articulate your value, advocate for yourself and contribute in senior rooms.
And perhaps most importantly, you're no longer wondering whether you're partner material.
You're thinking, acting and showing up like someone ready for partnership.
These are exactly the kind of results you’ll achieve inside Be The First.

INTRODUCING
Be The First
Group Coaching
Be The First Group Coaching is a six-month coaching programme where mid to senior-level Black lawyers take ownership of their progression and build a career that reflects their talent, contribution and potential.
Whether your goal is Partnership, Counsel, Head of Legal or another senior leadership role, you'll develop the skills, relationships and influence needed to progress, while receiving the coaching, accountability and support to help you implement them consistently.
You don't need another programme that gives you more information.
What’s needed is a personalised strategy, practical support and accountability to help you put those things into practice alongside a demanding legal career.
Previous clients have secured promotions, become partners, strengthened influential relationships and become recognised for the value they bring both inside their firms and across the wider market.Â
That's exactly what Be The First was designed to provide.
The Be The First Progression Pathway
Over six months, we'll work together on the areas that have the greatest impact on progression.
Not simply understanding what needs to happen.
But making it happen.
From creating time for career development to building the influence, relationships and credibility that support progression, each step is designed to help you create meaningful momentum in your career.
STEP 1
Take Control Of Your Time
You've spent years believing that success means working harder.
Taking on more work. Saying yes more often. Being available whenever you're needed.
The result is that the activities that actually drive progression, like building relationships, developing sponsors and strengthening your business case for promotion, are always pushed to tomorrow.
Inside Be The First, you'll learn how to create space for the work that moves your career forward, and build capacity for the higher demands that await you at the next level - without sacrificing your performance or burning yourself out.
As one client shared:
"I found overwhelm an insurmountable challenge and now I feel more consistently in control."
Time Control, Morning Mastery and the Designated BD Day are the tools that help you put this into practice.
STEP 2
Implement Feedback
Feedback is supposed to help you progress.
But when feedback is vague, inconsistent or difficult to interpret, it can leave you questioning what decision-makers actually want to see from you.
You'll learn how to use feedback as a tool for growth, implement it quickly and stop allowing it to undermine your confidence or distract you from your long-term goals.
One client described learning to receive feedback in this way:Â
"Now instead of resisting it, I can grow through it."
The Feedback Formula provides a practical framework for doing this consistently throughout your career.
STEP 3
Build Relationships With People Different To You
You've heard countless times that relationships matter.
What nobody explains is how to build those relationships when you're one of the only Black people in the room, or when the people making decisions about your future have different backgrounds, experiences and networks from your own.
Inside Be The First, you'll learn how to build genuine connection, strengthen your network and win sponsors who actively advocate for your progression.
Clients regularly describe stronger sponsorship and influence as a result of this work:
"People trust me and want to help me."
"He now involves me in all his BD efforts."
"I have built so much social capital in the firm."
You'll learn Relate-Agility - a practical tool to help you build connection and navigate these relationships with confidence and ease.
STEP 4
Increase Your Visibility
You’ve been taught that if you work hard enough, your work will speak for itself.
What nobody teaches you is that excellent work only progresses you if enough of the right people know you.
That’s why inside Be The First, you'll learn how to raise your profile, communicate your expertise and become known for the value you bring, so you build credibility beyond your team and stay front of mind for the best opportunities.
One client shared:
"My impact on the case is being referred to in front of the client in a way it was not before."
Another said:
"This is huge for my visibility. I can't believe my recognition is on par with all the big names."
The Visibility Challenge and Authentic Brand Curation help you put these skills into practice in a way that feels natural and authentic.
STEPÂ 5
Showcase Your Value
You know you're delivering value.
The challenge is communicating that value in a way decision-makers recognise and reward.
Many talented lawyers downplay their achievements or struggle to articulate the full impact of their contribution.Â
You'll learn how to communicate your impact clearly, confidently and consistently so the people making decisions about your future understand exactly why you're ready for what's next.
As one client put it:
"I can confidently articulate what I bring to the table now rather than hiding behind others."
Another shared:
"I did not understand my value... now I have clarity on what I bring, what I can achieve and the value I choose to create."
The Value Equation and RVI (Results, Value, Impact) provide a practical framework for making that value visible.

The Be The First Mindset
At the heart of Be The First is a simple but powerful shift:
From "I'm the only one" to "I'm the first."
When you’re the only one in the room, it's natural to find yourself looking for reassurance that you're enough, waiting for others to recognise your value and questioning whether you truly belong.Â
The Be The First mindset helps you build something much more powerful: belief in who you are, the value you bring and the impact you're capable of making.
As that identity strengthens, you become less driven by self-doubt and more guided by intention.Â
You respond to challenges instead of reacting to them.
You trust your judgement.
You stop waiting for permission to take up space.
And you start showing up with the confidence of someone who knows they belong in the room.Â
One participant described this identity shift like this:
"I'm still getting to grips with the new normal as it's sooooo amazing… like turning left on a plane!"

What Happens Inside The Programme
Be The First is designed to help you make meaningful progress over six months, not simply consume information.
From the moment you start, you'll have a clear goal, a personalised plan, consistent coaching touchpoints to support you every step of the way and a community of Black lawyers behind you.
Get Clear On What Will Move Your Career Forward
One of the biggest barriers to progress is thinking you have to improve everything at once.
You’re told to develop your expertise, gain more experience, be more visible, build stronger relationships, attract sponsors, do more business development, be more independent on deals, and strengthen your leadership, often without any clarity on where to start.
Instead, we'll help you identify the areas that will have the greatest impact on your progression and create a clear plan for moving these forward.
You'll begin with a Progression Audit and private Right Goal Coaching Session, helping you define the goal you're working towards, identify the skills you’ll need to achieve it and focus your attention on the areas that matter most.
Receive Coaching As Challenges Arise
Progression is rarely a straight line. Difficult conversations happen, feedback doesn't always land well, opportunities don't materialise as expected and moments of self-doubt can quickly derail momentum if they're not addressed.
That's why coaching sits at the heart of the programme.
Over six months, you'll participate in 24 live group coaching sessions where you'll receive support navigating real situations as they happen. Whether you're preparing for a promotion conversation, managing a difficult relationship or deciding how to respond to a setback, the expert coaching and accountability you receive ensures you keep moving forward.
Learn Alongside People Who Get It
One of the most powerful aspects of Be The First is the community.
There's something different about being in a room where you don't have to explain why being the only one matters, or why navigating progression can feel more complex when there are no role models who look like you.
You'll be with other Black lawyers who understand both the opportunities and challenges that come with progressing in environments where you're often the only one.
One participant observed:
"The safe and trusted atmosphere created resulted in open and frank sharing among the cohort."
Asked what she appreciated most about the group format, another participant responded:Â
"[The opportunity] to share the experiences with others and learn from each other."
Access Support Between Sessions
Your development doesn't stop when the coaching session ends.
Throughout the programme, you'll have access to the Be The First Membership, a community designed specifically for Black legal professionals navigating imposter syndrome, identity, confidence and career progression.
You'll also have access to session recordings, coaching resources and programme materials through the Be The First App, giving you ongoing support between sessions and a place to revisit key concepts whenever you need them.

Why Lawyers Trust Be The First
I'm Caroline Flanagan, The Black Lawyers' Coach.
I've been "the only one" since I was five years old. The only Black pupil in an all-white school. One of a handful of Black students at Cambridge. Almost always the only person of colour in the room at two of the world's leading law firms.
After my career as an international finance lawyer, I moved into executive coaching nearly two decades ago. For the last several years, I've worked exclusively with Black lawyers.
As a Black coach working with Black lawyers, you don't have to explain the microaggressions, code-switch your experience, or wonder whether I'll really understand.
I do. Because I've lived it.
Over the years, that experience has shaped the work I do today, both inside and outside the coaching room.
I'm the author of Be The First, a book exploring imposter syndrome in people of colour, host of the Legal Imposters Podcast, and creator of the Be The First methodology that has helped Black lawyers navigate progression and build successful careers on their own terms.

You've Worked Too Hard To Leave The Next Step To Chance
Your case for promotion won't build itself.
The visibility, relationships, sponsorship and trust that support progression take time to develop.
The moment you need them isn’t the time to start building them.
The time to build them is now.
Every month spent postponing your own development is another month spent helping someone else achieve their goals while yours remain on hold.
And the longer you leave your progression to chance, the easier it becomes to accept frustration, overwhelm and uncertainty as part of the job.
It doesn't have to be that way.
Be The First gives you the coaching, accountability and support to build the career you want and the success you're capable of creating.
